Neurofeedback & Biofeedback in Chicago & Naperville

Helping You Better Understand and Regulate the Mind-Body Stress Response

The mind and body are closely connected. Anxiety, chronic stress, chronic illness, pain, difficult medical experiences, and other challenges can affect how the brain and body respond to everyday demands.

At TriWellness, we provide neurofeedback and biofeedback in Chicago and Naperville and remote neurofeedback in Illinois as part of an individualized, integrative approach to mental health and wellness. These noninvasive approaches use real-time information about brain or physiological activity to help clients develop greater awareness ofโ€”and greater capacity to regulateโ€”their responses to stress.

Our clinicians consider the whole person when determining whether neurofeedback or biofeedback may complement therapy and other aspects of care.

What Is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a form of EEG biofeedback that measures patterns of electrical brain activity through sensors placed on the scalp. The information is translated into real-time feedback, often through visual or auditory cues.

During training, the brain receives feedback related to targeted patterns of activity. Through repeated sessions, neurofeedback is intended to support the brain’s capacity for self-regulation.

Depending on an individual’s needs and treatment goals, neurofeedback may be incorporated into care for concerns related to:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Attention and concentration
  • Emotional regulation
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Stress and pain associated with chronic illness or medical conditions
  • Other concerns involving regulation and functioning

Neurofeedback is not a passive treatment or a stand-alone solution for every concern. Our clinicians consider each client’s symptoms, history, goals, and broader treatment plan when determining whether it may be appropriate.

What Is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback helps clients become more aware of physiological processes that are often associated with stress and regulation.

Using noninvasive sensors, biofeedback can provide real-time information about functions such as heart rate, breathing, muscle tension, or other physiological signals, depending on the type of training being used.

With guidance and practice, clients can learn how breathing, relaxation, attention, movement, and other strategies influence their physiological responses. The goal is to develop skills that can be practiced beyond the therapy setting and applied during everyday situations.

Biofeedback may be useful when working with:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Emotional regulation
  • Chronic stress
  • Chronic illness and medical stress
  • Pain and muscle tension
  • Stress-related physiological responses
  • Relaxation and self-regulation skills

Neurofeedback and Biofeedback: What’s the Difference?

Both approaches use real-time feedback to increase awareness and support self-regulation, but they focus on different types of information.

Neurofeedback measures electrical brain activity and provides feedback related to patterns of brain functioning.

Biofeedback typically measures physiological signals from the body, such as heart rate, breathing, or muscle tension, and helps clients learn strategies for influencing those responses.

For some clients, one approach may be most appropriate. For others, neurofeedback or biofeedback may be incorporated alongside psychotherapy, behavioral strategies, mindfulness, or other interventions as part of a broader treatment plan.

Specialized Support for Chronic Illness & Medical Stress

Living with a chronic illness, chronic pain, complex medical condition, or ongoing medical treatment can place significant demands on both the body and mind.

Symptoms may be unpredictable. Medical appointments can become a regular part of life. Changes in health can affect sleep, relationships, school or work, independence, and a person’s sense of safety or confidence in their body.

Supporting individuals and families affected by chronic illness and medical stress is an important area of our clinical work at TriWellness.

Biofeedback or neurofeedback may be incorporated into a broader treatment plan to help clients develop greater awareness of stress responses and strengthen regulation skills. Biofeedback, in particular, can provide an opportunity to observe physiological responses in real time and practice strategies for influencing them.

Our work may focus on helping clients:

  • Recognize physical signs of stress and activation
  • Develop breathing, relaxation, and self-regulation skills
  • Cope with stress related to symptoms, appointments, procedures, or treatment
  • Manage the emotional demands of living with uncertainty
  • Develop a greater sense of agency in responding to stress
  • Integrate mind-body skills with psychotherapy and other aspects of care

These approaches do not treat the underlying medical condition and are not substitutes for appropriate medical care. Instead, they may serve as complementary tools for addressing the emotional, behavioral, and physiological effects of stress associated with health challenges.

An Integrated Approach to Mental Health Care

Neurofeedback and biofeedback do not have to occur in isolation from psychotherapy.

When appropriate, our clinicians may integrate these approaches with evidence-based psychotherapy, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

CBT can help clients understand connections among thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and physiological responses while developing practical strategies for changing patterns that contribute to distress.

ACT focuses on psychological flexibility, mindfulness, acceptance of difficult internal experiences, and taking meaningful action based on personal values.

Combining therapeutic approaches allows us to address concerns from multiple perspectives while keeping treatment focused on the individual client’s needs and goals.

Neurofeedback & Biofeedback for Children and Teens

Children and adolescents do not always have the words to explain what they are experiencing internally. Neurofeedback and biofeedback can provide additional ways to understand and work with regulation.

Depending on age, developmental needs, presenting concerns, and treatment goals, our clinicians may incorporate these approaches when supporting children and teens with concerns related to anxiety, attention, emotional regulation, stress, chronic illness, or difficult medical experiences.

With biofeedback, children and teens can see how their bodies respond to stress and practice concrete regulation strategies. Neurofeedback provides feedback about brain activity through an interactive training process.

When working with younger clients, we also value collaboration with parents and caregivers so that skills developed in treatment can be supported in everyday life.

Neurofeedback & Biofeedback for Adults

Adults may seek neurofeedback or biofeedback as part of treatment for anxiety, chronic stress, difficulties with regulation, chronic health concerns, or other challenges affecting daily functioning.

Our clinicians work collaboratively with each client to identify treatment goals and determine how these approaches may fit within their broader mental health care.

For individuals navigating chronic illness or significant medical stress, treatment may also address the emotional impact of symptoms, uncertainty, changing roles, relationships, work demands, and healthcare experiences.

Individualized, Collaborative Care

No single intervention is appropriate for everyone.

Before incorporating neurofeedback or biofeedback, we consider the client’s presenting concerns, relevant medical and mental health history, developmental needs, treatment goals, and other care they may be receiving.

We can also collaborate with pediatricians, physicians, medical specialists, therapists, schools, and other members of a client’s care team. This can be particularly valuable for children, adolescents, and individuals managing chronic or complex health conditions.

Our goal is to provide thoughtful, coordinated care while remaining clear about the role and limitations of each therapeutic approach.
